Description:

We read with interest the recently published ar-ticle by Arnold et al titled “Macular Xanthophylls and ω-3 Long-Chain Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids in Age-Related Macular De-generation: A Randomized Trial.”1The authors report theresults of a 12-month intervention with macular xantho-phylls and ω-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in pa-tients with nonexudative age-related macular degeneration(AMD), where the main outcome measures included plasmaxanthophyll concentrations and optical density of macular pig-ment (MP). Unfortunately, however, the methods used to as-sess these outcome measures were flawed, thereby render-ing the conclusion of the article unsafe.
