Description:

This programme aims to:

  • Equip secondary school students with the necessary knowledge, skills and confidence in reading and understanding food labels.
  • Increase the consumption of healthier foods in secondary school students as a result of greater awareness and knowledge of foods labels.

It achieves these aims by:

  • Equiping teachers and transition year students with the necessary knowledge, skills and confidence to teach other students how to read and interpret food labels.
  • Guiding and supporting teachers in introducing ‘food labels’ as part of the Home Economics curriculum, for both Junior and Leaving Cert cycles.
  • Supporting students in working with their parents and siblings in monitoring the foods being purchased with a view to adopting health eating habits among the family as whole.
