The profile is the result of Cork Healthy Cities and the Social Inclusion Unit of Cork City Council coming together to develop this profile and leading an interagency Committee to collaborate on the profile. The report draws on the expertise and knowledge and statistics of a wide range of partners, Cork City Council, HSE, UCC, Cork City Partnership, Niche, Ballyphehane/Togher CDP, Gardaí. It report highlights the complexity of the many challenges facing Cork into the future.

Lord Mayor Cllr Mary Shields, speaking before the launch said “The importance of having such a comprehensive analysis of Cork City is essential in developing local policy, guiding service provision to bring about a better quality of life for all in our city. This is a resource that can help everyone understand the importance of continuing the work towards a more equal, healthier and socially inclusive city.”

The Report highlights the diverse nature of Cork today and the challenges facing our city, including unemployment, the city’s ageing nature, the educational divide within the city, the areas and groups still struggling with disadvantage.

The Cork City Profile provides an invaluable means in gaining an insight into the factors that influence the health of the citizens of Cork city. The Profile affirms that the factors that determine health and well being lie outside the health sector and are socially and economically formed. Such factors include housing, poverty, low educational attainment, unemployment, discrimination and social exclusion which all impact on our health.

Section II of the Cork City Profile 2014 provides an in-depth analysis of all the Electoral Divisions in the city. Co-author of the report Tomás Kelly cited: “I recommend this report to everyone in Cork City, it contains information of interest, use and relevance unique to every single electoral area of the city.”

The Profile will inform the development of Cork Healthy Cities Phase VI 2014 – 2018 action plan and will inform the Local Community Development Committee’s Strategy for the City.

The Profile will be available to all organisations, NGO’s and State agencies within the city in developing targeted policies, plans, projects and programmes in shaping a healthier, socially inclusive city.
