Is it OK to be away? School attendance in the primary school years

19 Jun 2013

This chapter explores the school attendance among primary school aged children in Australia and its impact on academic performance. Regular school attendance is very important as it has a significant role in shaping both school-related and later-life outcomes. Using data from 'Growing Up in Australia, the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children' (LSAC), this chapter investigates the different school attendance patterns among primary school children as reported by parents and teachers; the family, child and school characteristics related to different attendance patterns; and whether poor attendance is associated with lower levels of achievement in primary school.
