Implementation Group to meet next week

Following discussions last week with the Minister for Health, Dr Leo Varadkar, it has been agreed that the ED Task Force Implementation Group will meet on September 14.

The Joint Chair of the ED Taskforce and member of the Implementation Group, Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) General Secretary Liam Doran, told IMT that his Organisation will seek “additional bed capacity, with the additional staff required — with a particular focus on the hospitals that are enduring the highest levels of overcrowding on a continuous basis, such as Beaumont, Drogheda, Galway and Limerick”.

“The ever increasing level of overcrowding can only be reduced with additional bed capacity, which means additional staff (recruiting staff will prove very problematic),” said Doran. “Additional capacity must be an emergency measure.”

Arising from the overcrowding crisis, the INMO Executive Council was due to meet on Tuesday (September 8), at which calls to support members “taking more strident action to highlight their unsafe working environment” were expected. The compromising of care that is occurring and the need for “emergency measures” was due to be highlighted.
