[Comment] A new Health Index for England: the Chief Medical Officer's 2018 annual report

The Chief Medical Officer for England's 2018 annual report1 looks ahead to health in England in 2040. The report covers four main areas: repositioning health as the nation's primary asset, creating an environment that prioritises health, emerging technologies, and preparing for the future through “futures thinking”, including forecasts from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation's Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study. The report highlights that we know what to do to improve health over the next two decades and in many cases the green shoots of a brighter future are visible now.
