Awards open for business

26 Jun 2015

The Irish Healthcare Awards 2015 are calling for entries to the prestigious competition from individuals and institutions across the health service.

In their 14th year, the awards commemorate and honour innovation, excellence and achievement in the Irish health system, paying tribute to projects and individuals that have made a positive contribution to patient care.

Hosted by Irish Medical Times, the awards celebrate every area of healthcare, including health service delivery, education, public health, patient support, clinical research and pharmaceutical innovation. They are designed to recognise the very best individuals and teams working in acute and primary care, education and training, the private sector, patient organisations and health IT.

Last year, the National Centre for Paediatric Rheumatology at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin, in association with St Vincent’s University Hospital, Dublin, won the ‘Outpatient Initiative of the Year’ as well as the overall prize, An Duais Mhór, for the YARD — the Young Adolescents with Rheumatic Diseases Clinic — a project aimed at helping adolescents and young people transfer from paediatric to adult services.

Cork paediatric surgeon Prof Barry O’Donnell, whose name will always be synonymous with the innovation of endoscopic correction of vesicoureteric reflux — the Subureteric Teflon Injection, or Sting — that was developed with the help of Prof Prem Puri, was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for his massive contribution to shaping Irish and world surgery.

This year sees the introduction of a new category ‘Best Sustainable Healthcare Project’, which recognises creative solutions that drive greater efficiencies within the healthcare system while simultaneously improving patient outcomes.

Another first is the choice of a charity partner for the Awards, with the Laura Lynn Hospice for terminally ill children to benefit from this year’s event.

A new website — www.healthcareawards.ie — has been created to allow entrants to submit entries, book tables for the prize-giving ceremony as well as make payments online.

The closing date for submissions is Friday, August 21, and winners will be announced at a gala event in Dublin’s Shelbourne Hotel, presented by broadcaster Ivan Yates, on November 5.

Speaking at the launch of the awards, David Kelly, Publisher of IMT and MIMS Ireland, said: “Irish Medical Times is very proud to once again host the Irish Healthcare Awards, recognised as Ireland’s pre-eminent  honours in the area of health and medicine.“
