IPH presents preliminary data on the prevalence of musculoskeletal conditions at Northern Ireland Pain Summit

The Pain Alliance of Northern Ireland hosted a conference on chronic pain in Northern Ireland. IPH presented preliminary data on the prevalence of musculoskeletal conditions as part of our work in estimating and forecasting the population prevalence of chronic health conditions. Oxford study urges introduction of a “fat tax” on food and drinks accompanied by subsides for fruit and vegetables

According to research conducted by the Department of Public Health at Oxford University “fat taxes” would have to increase the price of food and drinks by 20% in order to reduce obesity and obesity-related diseases. The research, led by Dr. Oliver Mytton and Dr. Mike Rainer examined international evidence of “fat tax” legislation. The study also recommends introducing subsides on fruit and vegetables to coincide with the introduction of “fat taxes” in order to impact significantly on dietary habits. Scottish government to introduce minimum alcohol price of 50p per unit

The Scottish Government has announced its intention to set a minimum alcohol price of 50p. Highlighting the need to take a consistent approach across the UK, there is a possibility that Scots may cross the border to buy their alcohol in England, where the proposed minimum price is 40p.

Follow the flame with figures

To mark the start of the Olympic torch procession, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) today published an interactive map that shows the shape of UK society in 2012. You can follow the “flame with figures” and click on a stop to reveal key statistics such as population, life expectancy, employment rate, and education scores for the local authority where the stop is located.

Food labelling consultation launched in the UK

Health Ministers in the United Kingdom have called for all food manufacturers and retailers to implement the same food labelling system to facilitate a uniformed approach to labelling food. It is envisaged that all food highlight through their labels how much fat, salt, sugar and calories are in a product. 50p minimum alcohol price would reduce overall consumption by 5.5%

This is one of the findings of Sheffield University's alcohol research group which was commissioned by the Scottish government to examine the impact of setting a minimum price for alcohol of 50p. Harmful drinkers' consumption would fall by more than 10%, with moderate drinker’s consumption falling by 2.5%. It is hoped the minimum price will lead to a reduction in hospital admissions and deaths from alcohol abuse.

Enthusiastic response to NECOBELAC’s Open Access Training Course in Dublin; Presentations now available

The Open access (OA) movement provides access to scientific outputs in publications that are freely available and fosters the adoption of open access publication models.

The NECOBELAC Project held a one day train the trainer course in Dublin on 9 May 2012. The course “Scholarly Outputs in Public Health: How to Write, Disseminate and Access Open Access Scientific Information” will be followed by a series of webinars.

How to optimise smoking cessation – A special Seminar

The Ulster Cancer Foundation is hosting a seminar on how to optimise smoking cessation. Ireland to host international conference on cystic fibrosis
The 35th European Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Conference will take place in Dublin on 6-9th of June 2012.  The conference will discuss the science of CF and how to translate science into clinical practice. Scientific and clinical developments in CF are particularly important for Ireland as we have the highest incidence of CF in the world, with around three times the incidence of the United States or the rest of Europe.
